First Stage 2 Skills Day

Today was interesting! We had our first stage 2 skills day session!

We had some pre reading to prepare prior to our practical class which was very useful to have a good idea of the ins and outs of skills we would be practicing.

What did we learn?

We were in little groups of 5 and rotated round 4 different stations:

Station 1 was Chest Auscultation and Airway Management. We practiced airway maneuvers including the jaw thrust and head tilt. We went through and practiced using the oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal and I-gels and a wee practice inserting endotracheal tubes with the laryngoscope. We also learnt a bit about the chest auscultation.

At Station 2 practiced catheterization which I had not experienced before. We explored the reasons for the use of catheters and then practiced the skill with the manikin and of course using the Aseptic Non Touch Technique.

Station 3 was nasogastric and oral gastric tubing. This was a good one cause I had a pretty good idea about these having practiced this skills in my last placement at the neonatal unit. I learnt how this skills could is applied to children and adults.

Station 4 venipuncture and cannulation! This was a very very new skill! A skill lost of student nurses wait patiently to learn!

So now we have learnt these skills it’s time to practice them in practice! Roll on placement! 😊👩🏻‍⚕️
